"I don't care much for reading" quipped my 11 year old bonus child.

"How could you not like reading?" questioned my 10 year old God child. "I've been to India, outer space, happy, terrified and every other emotion. I get to time-travel, meet people from all over the world and learn all sorts of stuff just by opening a book. I mean how could you not love books?"

Confessions of a non-literary book worm.
Bonus child enjoys reading now, but only the allotted 1/2 hour his parents make him do every day. Sometimes he forgets to ask me the time. One minute less is never an option. Over 30 minutes and I stop counting... every adventure filled extra minute.
I used to hide novels behind my text books, and sneak in a few pages during class.

I download lots of free e-books to the Kindle app on my phone. Buying books is off the budget for now. There's not a huge range of English novels buried in Danish libraries. I promise I will get better at leaving reviews. I have sent email's or private messages to the authors before and have always been pleasantly surprised when they respond.
I try to analyse what's going on in the head/heart of every author I read.
I am not a grammar nazi. I am more impressed with people that can speak two or more languages with slightly off grammar, than a perfectionist in one language - Just because you can't get your apostrophes in the right places doesn't mean you don't have an interesting story to tell.
My biggest confession: I rarely remember the names of authors or titles of their books. I can't even think of one book immediately, where I remember both. Who wrote Wuthering Heights? What was the title of my favourite David Malouf novel? Was Tom Sawyer the name of the novel or the character...? Somewhere in my heart and dendrites each story resides.
(Didn't Einstein say he refused to remember anything he could look up in a book?)
Is it a book worm? No. It's a baby dendrite getting longer with every new tale. Image courtesy of www.clkr.com |

ReplyDeleteHugs and chocolate!
Oh no Shelly and lol... I started a fire in the toilet when I was smoking and reading once.. lucky it was just the paper - which burns really fast...
DeleteLove your posts--this one is particularly fun for me as I'm currently blogging about my keeper books for the A-Z Challenge. The only problem so far is now I want to read each one all over again! So many books, so little time. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi Valerie, I'm not even sure I'll ever finish the books I have loaded in my kindle app - let alone go back to the ones i loved, if could remember them all :) Thank you
DeleteI was reading before I went to school. And I still love reading.
ReplyDeleteThat quite impressive William, so many kids can't read properly by the time they have finished school.
DeleteReading is like breathing for me. Love all your posts. They are fun and also helped me get to know you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Munir, reading has certainly sustained me at times.
DeleteI'm like you. In fact, the other day a colleague invited me to lunch and I said we could sit together but not talk because I wanted to read!
ReplyDeletethat somehow sounds acceptable to me - though in this day and age I guess it's not much different to playing with your smart phone when in company
DeleteLoved this post. I had reduced my book reading ever since I started to use spectacles but am slowly getting back to them again.
ReplyDeleteI worry about my vision from reading to much - I try to balance it with looking far
DeleteI'm really bad at remembering author's names as well, which, as an author myself is a really bad thing ;P I have made my leg go dead by reading too long on the loo! I love my kindle, instant gratification for books - I wanna read it, I can :D I'm not a grammar totalitarian, but too many mistakes and some stories become unreadable - however, I do admire the multi-lingual, being a Brit and barely able to communicate a hello in the two other languages I learnt at school, French and German.

Sure too much bad grammar or too many mistakes can make things unreadable but I have rarely come across that.
DeleteA books. Best part of my summer-vacation is being buried in a book.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading, writing and admiring for as long as I can remember.
I normally forget everything, then when I read it again, I'm moved again by the intensity of the book.
Giving me a forever first reaction to my favorite books. I normally just remember if the book was good or not.
And whatever book is on my currently reading list is most often always my new favorite book.
I've had my friends ask me to please put the book down; I read a series of 47 books (each about 300 pages) 6 times in a row.
Let's just say I wasn't able to speak because I was too busy living in my fantasy book world, where I'd like to stay most of the time but reality kind of prevents me from staying full-time ;)
Love your post, can't wait for tomorrow!!! ;D
I can't imagine reading or writing a series of 47 books, that is a might effort
DeleteI, too, have difficulty remembering both the name and author of books I've read. Often I'll go to Good Reads and look at the books I've read and have hardly any recollection of them. I do enjoy books though and if I connect well with a character, I'm hooked. I like the freebie Amazon books, too and download more than I can ever read onto my mini-Ipad. You do take your chances though, as I've read good books and absolute crap that you know is self published junk. Of course there are some good self published books out there but you do have to be discerning when it comes to those free books.
ReplyDeleteEnjoying your posts of all your different loves!

I have read the occasional book twice and though it was familiar but didn't realise I had read it till the end too... discernment is good quality in all manner of things :)
DeleteHi human, Ida,
ReplyDeleteOn "Q", I finally manage to get back over to your site. My human used to be a bookworm. A most avid reader. Pawhaps, ironically, these days he doesn't have much time to read books. Too busy reading and commenting and sometimes writing a blog to actually read a book. I sometimes devour a book. Although I didn't like the taste of the pages much. Arf!
Pawsitive wishes,
Penny, the friendly host of the Alphabark Challenge! :)
Oh Penny I questioned my use of the word devour, I was trying to avoid adverbs :) I too read a lot less novels because of access to so many other mediums but wherever there are words written by another person I can be transported to somewhere other than here... and that is usually a good thing :)
DeleteI once used clothes pegs to attach my book to a hanger so I could read while I was doing dishes. Ah, not so effective.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, my favorite part of the year was summer. Yes, there was that whole no school thing, but what really excited me about summer was the library. A day or two after school let out my mom took us to the library. My sister and I eagerly signed up for the reading program. We picked the number of books we thought we could read over the summer. At each quarter mark we received a prize; ice cream cone, burger, pizza, etc. My mom never let us fudge on our goals. She made sure it would be a challenge for us to finish and that we picked out books at our age level or above. I remember afternoons of reading in blanket tents, on my bed, and outside. I was never bored when I was reading a book. And now, all these years later, I'm writing my first book. Hurray for reading!
