26 Greatest loves of my life - Let's call him Cazaly #atozchallenge

Cazaly was full of energy, always misbehaving and the best Aussie Rules Footy player in school.  In second grade all the kids had to hold hands as we walked into class. I started falling in love with him when I noticed that he lined up next to me, all the time. It was only natural I learned to how to play football.

After weeks of perfecting my kicking and marking skills, I asked him if he wanted to be boyfriend.  He agreed, on one condition. Did I barrack for the Magpies?

Well, of course I said YES.  I knew nothing about the professional football league and had no idea who or what the Magpies were. My Mum told me their real name was Collingwood and they wore black and white. I watched my first game of football that weekend. I didn't understand the rules and couldn't tell the difference between the teams colours on our black and white TV.

Our romance blossomed over shared lunches and games of kick to kick every playtime. The dilemma of whether to play on the same team so we could win together, or opposite teams so we could stand next to each other, was a difficult decision.

As my passion for gymnastics, swap cards and skipping rope grew, I lost interest in being tackled and chasing an egg shaped ball.  I rarely keep up to date with football results anymore either - but if you ask me who I barrack for I'll probably always sing out loud - "Good old Collingwood forever, they know how to play the game, side by side we stick together, to uphold the magpies name..."

Did someone you love influence the loyalty, to your favourite sports team? Why does our loyalty for the players change but never the team?

Have you ever seen Aussie Rules football? Here's an advertisement, with a song dedicated to the real Cazaly, from the 70's. It still gives me goosebumps, 'there's a lot more to footy than really meets the eye.'

  2. Hi human, Ida,

Have you any idea how sore my paws are? I have only managed to get here now and you are on the letter "C". So many blogs and I'm exhausted. It's gone two in the morning. I so wish that this is the final year of the dreadful A to Z.

That made for an interesting relationship, my dear human friend. As for Aussie Rules football. My human has watched it and wonders if there are any rules :)

    1. I do have an idea Penny - i've got a touch of RSI myself... I think the A-Z will be around a while longer than just another year... the rules used to be harder to catch but it has tamed down a lot over the last decade or so

    1. The game was originally invented to keep cricketers fit over the winter - and your thoughts would be right :)

  5. That was a cute story. And you're so right about our loyalty to teams. My son faced this recently when his favorite player was traded from his favorite team. (It's still his favorite team.)

    1. I have never understood die hard fans that go from loving a player to hating him because of the team he plays on - I appreciate their athleticism

  7. Hi Ida .. fun story - I've tried to watch the odd Aussie Rules football .. but can't say I'm enamoured .. I used to quite like our Rugby and may have it on as a game is played, but not watch as such ... love your Cazaly love story of early life .. I've enjoyed the music mix too .. cheers Hilary

    1. Come finals time I try and watch a game or two - in Melbourne were AFL originated it is somewhat of a religion... I used to live near the main stadium and could hear the crowd of up to 90000 people roar 1 km away...

  8. Hi Ida, love your blog and your C. I've learned not to comment on G+ reposts of other people's AtoZ posts because the comments go to the secondary poster, not to the originator. So I tracked you down here and glad I did.

  9. I love your theme for the challenge this year! I've been strangely fascinated with this idea about childhood sweethearts for a long time! I've been for one footy game that involved the Magpies (coz the friend that brought me was a Collingwood supporter) but I was more interested in stuffing myself with pies and beer haha :)

    1. Thanks Mel - I am so excited you have seen the mighty Maggies play a game in person... though I'm with you 50% of the fun of a footy match is in those pies and beers

    2. By the way the childhood sweethearts is fascinating me too... and as you'll see later on quite telling in the long run

  10. Hi, I loved the video. It doesn't look anything like American football. It looks exciting though. I used to pull for Denver because my husband loves the team. I pull for my college team, the SC Gamecocks in all sports. My husband also loves his alma mater high school team and we go to a lot of games even though we don't have a student in high school yet. I enjoyed reading about your young boyfriend. It was funny and I so relate. ;)

    1. Hi Mary, I think football is just a way of life for some people - i guess like church or religion is for others

  11. For three days now you've throughly entertained me. I'm following you now. :-)

My favorite sport is NFL Football. My team is the Denver Broncos, and I bleed orange and blue. Well, blood makes me squeamish so it might actually be red, I don't look. When I was a kid I was able to watch all of the Seattle Seahawks games because we lived all the way across the state. But when we moved to Seattle I could no longer watch home games because they were blacked out. This made me so angry that I went searching for a new team. Who did I pick? A rival of Seattle's so that I could bet against them. Somehow that made it all better. And now, decades later, the Broncos are still my team!

    1. haha the song not the biff - the guy was actually a trainer not a referee (not that it makes it any better) you will be pleased to know that the game has cleaned up a lot in the last decade or so... though there is a song called 'bring back the biff' - there was an uproar when the no blood rule was introduced...

  14. Oh my gosh yes! American Football. The SuperBowl, I was so young then, and I hated the sport, because I didn't understand it. Nor did I care to. The things you do when you're young!

  17. I watched soccer for the first time during the world cup in Barcelona, because a man I was dating at the time was a huge fan. He didn't last, but I still watch an occassional game. So no, he didn't convert me to a particular club, but at least I started noticing when there was a big game on. Before him, sport was just white noise to me.
